August 2009 Newsletter ......
The season is winding down for many folk but we still have a few active members out there.
Squamish, July 5: Eric (the Journeyer) Jensen had a great race in Squamish, posting a person a best of 2.24.57 for the Olympic distance. He was seven minutes faster than last year’s race and extremely happy with his result. Eric says this is a great race on a really nice course and he recommends it to everyone.
Vancouver Half Ironman, July 12: Rick Gammie continued to tear up the half ironman courses in the Lifesport series. This time he cracked the 5 hour barrier and posted a finishing time of 4:59:28 good enough for 4th in his age group on 39th overall.
Self Transcendence, Victoria, August 2: Five club members turned up for this race. It was the 30th anniversary for this event and it was a non wet suit swim. The water was warmer than the air temperature at the start. Fastest across the line was Eric (the Journeyer) Jensen in 2:26 14 and was fourth in his age group. Next was Ken Wright in 2:37:53. Steve Nagle appeared to have a nap while on the swim course (only 30 seconds faster than his wife) and finished in 2:44:57. Deb Leger posted 3:02:59 and Linda Nagle rounded out the group at 3:37:50 after spending 25 minutes dealing with a flat tire and a pump that wouldn’t work. This race is one of the most relaxed races in the series and has some of the beat food (pancakes and fruit crumble to name just a couple of the munchies). The race includes a duathlon, team events and new this year was the youth race. Put it on your calendar for 2010.
Police Fire Games, Vancouver, August 1 – 9: Congratulations to Julie Goulet who captured a bronze medal in the 2km open water swim at this event. These games draw athletes from all over the world, so this is a great performance by one of our own.

New Balance Half Iron: June 21, Victoria.
A husband and wife were seen exiting the water almost at the same time. Our spectators say that Sandra Jensen was first out the water but the results officially have Josh West with the fastest swim. After a 31:33’ swim Josh posted the fastest club time of 4:38:29. Sandra had a great race finishing in 5:03:20 and placing 2nd in her age category. Club members and former CR residents Brent Shearer (5:21:39) and Fiona Mackenzie (5:36:54) were next at the finish line. Janice Scriba laid down a solid race to finish in 5:51:07. Terry Browne in his first Half Iron distance came in comfortably under the 6 hour mark at 5:54:18 and Georgina Knox had a great first Half Ironman sneaking in under the 6 hour mark in 5:59:06.
In the team competition the club was represented in every category. Two Ironchicks and a Rooster in the mixed section (Sue Bennett, Lynne Gunning and Trevor Despins) had the fastest team time of 5:28:08. What Were We Thinking? In the female category comprised of Lori Dalbock and Sarah Percevault & Team Cory Percevault in the male category comprised of Craig Dalbock and Cory. Maybe just a little bit of family rivalry there??

Pictured above at the New Balance 1/2 Iron:
Rick Gammie, Deb Leger and Linda Nagle (head Official).
Training:
Club swims: Tuesday, McIvor Lake 6pm.
Bike Rides: Wednesday 6 pm Sportsplex.

Qualicum Beach Triathlon, June 29.
This race featured one of the best father/son duels in an event this year with Jaimen Cronk just beating Dad in the run portion of the race by 7 seconds. Ken Wright placed 5th in the 45 – 49 age group and Peter Bezuidenhout placed 2nd in 50 – 54. Adrian Moskal placed 5th in his age group and it should be noted that although Bruce Holbrook placed 6th in his age group he was beaten to the finish line by Lo Lanning by 7 seconds (Colleen – I guess you can have a family rivalry with Lo now!) Leanne Eriksen and Laurie Gage rounded out the adult participation.
In the youth categories Kaely Cronk placed 2nd and Breanne Flohr 3rd in the 15 – 17 age group. Eric Wright placed 5th and Michael Brandson 6th for the guys in this age group. Cowichan Triathlon, Fuller Lake, July 5.
The club cleaned up in several categories in this race. However two club members seemed to think that the sprint distance bike was not demanding enough and went on to do the full distance on the Challenge course. Matt Barclay and Erik Wright had great swim times but ended up on the 34 km long course bike route and did not finish their race. (Read the race instructions next time gentlemen!)
In the Sprint race Richard Cronk was the fastest club finisher in 1:00:19. He was third overall and first in his category. He beat son Jaimen by almost a minute this time but Jaimen still placed first in his age category (16 – 18) and 4th overall. Rounding out that age category were Sam Marcheco-Crespo in second and Michael Brandson in 3rd for an STC sweep on the podium. Craig Dalbock placed 2nd in his age group followed by Terry Browne in 4th. Roger Gionet scooped a 2nd place in his age group. In the ladies sprint race Linda Nagle took 1st in her age group and Lori Dalbock 3rd.
In the long course event which features a very challenging bike course Ken Wright took 2nd in the 45 – 49 age group, Steve Nagle was 1st in 55 – 59 and Deb Leger took 3rd in her age group. The day was rounded out with several club members taking home great draw prizes. Pictured left, Ken Wright, below Steve Nagle.

Jaimen Cronk took gold in the 17 – 19 year division despite stomach problems. Leanne Eriksen’s team pulled off a silver in the relay. It should also be noted that Christy Neil completed her first FULL DISTANCE race (no shortcuts this time) and Shane Harle was able to count the correct number of laps but had some directional problems and was disqualified!
Shawnigan Lake Half marathon and Olympic Distance Race:
The water was a cool 16.5 degrees and the road extremely rough. Despite those challenges Deb Leger place 2nd in 50 – 54 in the Half and Rick Gammie placed 4th in 45 – 49. Lynne Gunning was forced to downsize to the Olympic distance race due to injury but managed to post a 5th place finish in 40 – 49. (This would have been a medal placing had the race organizers followed the Tri BC rules and awarded medals in 5 year age categories!!!!). One of our members who recently moved to Nanaimo, Fiona Mackenzie also completed the Olympic distance event.

Merville 15km Road
Race:
April 4, 2009
A great turn out. 12 club members took
part and many others rode down to the
race. In the men’s 45 – 49 age group we
have some pretty stiff competition in
the club and which club member ran
1:07:40 while pushing a baby stroller?
First club
member across the line was El Presidente
Ken Wright in 1:01:35. 5th in his age
category and 38th overall. Ken Clausen
was 1:03:08 (9th ) and Rick Gammie in
1:05:23 (11th). Watch for these guys to
battle for position at the races.
Sandra Jensen was 2nd in her age
category while pushing a stroller. Next
came our newest member Leanne McIntee in
1:09:33 (6th). Sandra Milligan 1:12:04
(5th). Other club members that raced
were Bruce Holbrook (1:13:09), Brent
Shearer & Fiona Mackenzie – now based in
Nanaimo (1:18:21), Terry Browne (1:19
:04), Deb Leger (1:24:41) and Larry
Adams (1:53:40).

Snow
to Surf:
April 19, 2009
Buns & Roses podiumed at last and took
3rd place in the mixed Masters category.
Club members Colleen Holbrook, Lynne
Gunning, Terry Browne & Linda Kendrick
were on the winning team. KMA (Kiss My
Ass) despite placing 6th overall were
denied a podium spot – and boy did we
hear about it. Still sniveling into
their beers are Steve Nagle & Darcy
Lawley. Bin 449 just missed a podium
spot as well but you don’t hear Claire
Moglove, Ruth Huxham, Sandra Murphy,
Linda Nagle or Paulette McLean
complaining about it. Sue Bennett’s team
, Pedal Your World Optimists podiumed
once again for first in the Women’s
Grand masters category.

Delta Triathlon:
April 25, 2009
We had two members racing in this early
season sprint event. Eric Jensen placed
third in his age group in a time of
1:09:22. He was closely followed by Rick
Gammie in 1:11:44, good for 8th in the
competitive 45 - 49 age group.

THE
YETI SNOWSHOE RACE, Mount Washington,
January 17, 2009 .
Winter
Training.........
Spectacular
scenery and wonderfully warm weather
made for fast race performances at the
Yeti Snowshoe race and some great
placings by members of the Strathcona
Triathlon Club.
Jaimen Cronk was
the fastest club member and placed first
in the 16 – 19 year old age category
with a blistering time of 32.11 minutes
for the 5km event. Hot on his
heels were Ken Wright (32.32) and
Richard Cronk (32.34) placing 3rd
& 4th
in their age group (40 – 49). In
the women’s 50 – 59 age category is was
a clean sweep for the club with Linda
Nagle 1st (41.18), Claire
Moglove 2nd (49.01) and
Paulette McLean 3rd (49.03).
The STC group ran as members of the
ShoreRunners group and helped them place
second in the team standings.
Following the race
everyone (except Jaimen?) enjoyed their
free Sleeman's beverage, great snacks
and some lucky members even won great
draw prizes. How about an STC team
for 2010? It is a great event for
everyone from kids to adults, runners to
walkers and it’s lots of fun.
